DJI MIC Mini the Allrounder mic

I have a lot of microphones available here and yet I got the DJI Mic Mini a few days ago. Here are my experiences.

Introduction

DJI Mac mini: The all-rounder for all occasions

The DJI Mic Mini comes in different versions, including two transmitters, a charging cradle, two transmitters without charging tray or with charging trays for the connections of the microphones and of course also as a single device, if you really want it.

I first tried the version of two devices, without the hard case charging cradle. I ordered these later.

The offered set and the results

For a set of two microphones and a receiver with a price of just under 60 €, you have to ask yourself, of course, whether the quality is right and how you can achieve such savings. As a direct comparison, I also have the DJI MIC2   available, which was included in the Osmo Pocket 3.

I have often used the latter in connection with my videos, especially in conjunction with a lavalier microphone. And this is where the first savings begin, because a jack plug connection for connecting an external microphone, usually a lavalier microphone, is searched in vain here. This means that the device can only be operated as a wireless microphone, without the possibility of connecting external microphones.

But the quality, as I think, is quite decent, if you attach it to the clothes or even under the clothes, for example, with the clip on the microphone or with the magnet. Then the microphone is relatively close to the voice source and the quality of the audio recording is quite good. DJI offers further setting options in conjunction with the Mimo app, namely, for example, as a very important option, that the microphone records a mono track normally and can play the second mono track with a safety track, which is a few decibels lower, to avoid cliffs of the audio tracks. This also works quite well, as long as you only use a single microphone.

24 bit restriction?

And with the clipping auction we are already at another limitation, because the Mig Mini can only record in 24 bit, so that it is necessary here to level the volume of the audio source, regardless of whether you record in an iPhone or with the receiver also receiving in the camera, accordingly. But that’s easy, because after all, we didn’t do anything else with other microphones such as the Datey or the Rode Video Mic or anything else.

After leveling and I have set the receiver here so that it is at zero, and then I can use the level indicators of my cameras very well to assess where the sound has to be. I’m usually there at minus 9 to -12 dB and get audio recordings that don’t stick under any circumstances, if I record at least at about the same volume.

In the meantime, I still bought the charging cradle because it is simply more practical and everything fits in here. Of course, this applies to the two microphones as well as the windscreen parts and all cables also fit in. In addition, the microphones can be loaded here and switch on automatically as soon as you open the lid.

Conclusion

The audio quality itself is amazingly good in my opinion, especially when you look at the price of these microphones. I will certainly use the DGI Mc Mini more often in the future, but also from time to time the GGI MIC zwo, which as I said offers me the advantage of also connecting a Lavalier microphone, and due to the 32-bit float recording I of course have the larger reserves here in the audio editing.
