Week in review 11-2024 and this week was a beautiful spring week with pleasant temperatures. I hope it stays that way 🙂

Last week review 11-2024

This week, the last part of my series on the OPNSense firewall dealt with the connection of VoIP, i.e. telephony. This is where I was most worried that it might not work, because you hear quite different opinions in many forums. As you know, I had logically placed my Fritzbox behind the firewall after installing the DSL modem, among other things so that WLAN was once again separated from the rest of the network.

However, Internet telephony now also had to pass through the firewall with the appropriate approvals. This is initially the SIP protocol with which a telephone establishes the connection. That was the easy part, because it only involves port 5060. The VoIP servers with which the Fritzbox makes contact are unfortunately several, so I had to release a (partial) network due to a lack of documentation.

Since the connected telephone or the Fritzbox establishes a direct connection with the other party, the corresponding ports and servers had to be released here. This works wonderfully in OPNSense with aliases which, if you use them consistently, are quite easy to maintain because you only have to change them in one place. VoIP has been running smoothly with this for several months now.

In the article I wrote about secure passwords, I also reported on my switch from Keepass to KeePassXC, which is simply more convenient to use thanks to its browser integration. KeePassXC is now available in version 2.7.7 and also supports passkeys. I link here to an article by the BSI on the advantages of passkeys. Windows, Aplle, Google and others now support login via passkeys.

Then, according to rumors, the launch of stream cameras from Logitech, which have mFT format, is imminent. This should then go up to 4K30p. In the article, it looks as if these cameras will have interchangeable lenses. This would of course be an absolute gain in quality if you could rely on the larger sensor and of course the better lenses from the Olympus and Panasonic camp. But let’s wait until March 19, when the innovation will be officially presented.

All in all, another very eventful week. I hope you enjoy the articles and look forward to your questions and comments.
