DJI Mic Mini 2S – upgrade from Mic Mini worth it?

The DJI Mic Mini has convinced me in recent weeks as a small and uncomplicated wireless microphone. Nevertheless, I have now switched to the new DJI Mic Mini 2S. The reason is mainly a function that I missed with the Mic Mini: the internal 32-bit float recording.

DJI Mic Mini 2S – upgrade from Mic Mini worth it?

A few weeks ago I introduced you to the DJI Mic Mini in an article. About a week later, DJI introduced the DJI Mic Mini 2, but at that time I didn’t switch.

However, I could not resist switching to the DJI Mic Mini 2S. The DJI Mic Mini is an excellent little microphone, and the quality is perfectly adequate for my purposes, for example for YouTube videos or for vlogging.

You simply plug it in, briefly adjust the volume, which is relatively fast, and you can get started.

With the DJI Mic Mini 2 I saw no reason to switch, because except for more noise profiles and two dedicated noise reductions there was no decisive technical progress here for me. Also the clips that were used here in color and the DJI supplied to adapt the wireless microphone optically to the clothes or other things were less interesting to me.

On the DJI Mic Mini 2S i recorded a video:

Then a few days ago came the presentation of the DJI Mic Mini 2S, which has the same features as the DJI Mic Mini 2.

However, DJI has integrated an additional feature in the Mic Mini 2S, which I also have with the Osmo Pocket 3, for example: The recordings can also be recorded on an internal memory of almost 15 GB.

Even if the cost of the microphone set was more than twice as high as the DJI Mic Mini 2 or the Mic Mini of the first version, I decided on this model. This equipment can sometimes, especially when recording outside, can ultimately save a recording.

32-bit float recording

In principle, the 32-bit float recording offers additional security because a larger area is available here in which the level can be pulled up or down without further adjustment during later post-processing.

With this method there is a high spread, and I can save even quite large overdrives or much too quiet recordings in the last consequence, without really losing quality.

But you don’t have to do every recording with 32-bit float. Even now I still record directly into the camera with the DJI Mic Mini 2S, in this case with 24 bit.

Of course, I still pick up the recordings accordingly. That’s what makes the system so interesting to me. Like the first version, it is relatively uncomplicated to handle.

When I remove the microphone or both microphones from the charging cradle, they are already on. All I need to do is mount the receiver on the camera shoe, plug the audio cable into the camera, and I’m done.

DJI Mimo App

With the DJI Mic Mini 2S, various setting options are also added via the Memo app. Because the device does not automatically record internally; this function must first be set via the app.

Also here, just like with the second or the first version, you have the option, for example, to set the noise cancellation or a recording profile that emphasizes either the bass or the treble more strongly. In addition, there are several other setting options.

As an additional technical difference, I now have the option to connect up to four microphones to the receiver, while the DJI Mic Mini 2 or the first version were limited to two microphones.

However, I think this is an option that I personally will not use.

Conclusion

The change was worth it for me, because the internal recording for each station simply offers additional security. I don’t use the noise reduction so far, because I rely on tools from Da Vinci Resolve here. But if you would like to have it even easier and above all want to save time in the follow-up, you can of course use this in the appropriate environment.

Neverthese, everyone has to decide for themselves whether this essential function of internal recording is worth the price.
