The Viltrox DC-X2 a superbright field monitor for outside usage
|I’ve had a few monitors, most recently the Desview R705, which was very good value for a 7-inch touch monitor, but at 450 nits it wasn’t the brightest. That’s why I looked around for a brighter monitor of roughly the same size.
Introduction
The Desview R705 was always sufficient for indoor shots, even if its workmanship wasn’t the best, but even in the dull weather it was a bit borderline outside. That’s why I’ve always been looking for a much brighter monitor of the same size.
After some research, I went for the Viltrox DC-X2, which is only 6 inches, but can be up to 2,000 nits bright. It also has built-in fans, but more on that later.
Scope of delivery
There are two things to mention here: the monitor comes with a hard shell in which small parts can be safely stored.
The scope of delivery also includes a white, Sony NP-F compatible battery, which has a USB-C port for charging, so that a separate charger is not required. An HDMI cable and a mini HDMI are included. Unfortunately, I cannot use the mini HDMI because my Lumix S5 has a micro HDMI port. I have to order a short micro HDMI cable for this.
The fact that the hot shoe adapter really holds the monitor (you could also say it is a bit tight) is more than worth mentioning, and the package already includes a screen protector.

The monitor also has 4 hardware function keys that are pre-assigned, but whose assignment can be changed at any time.
Of course, the monitor has various tools, such as false color, histogram, vectorscopes, which help in assessing sharpness and exposure. The touch menu is quite clear and of course you can also assign the most important functions to one of the 4 function keys.
In addition to the usual tools, the monitor itself has an option to display a section of the image significantly enlarged, which can be useful not only for macro shots.
The sun visor
Almost all monitors include a protective cover that must first be attached to a frame of the monitor with a type of Velcro. This is quite laborious.
Viltrox takes a different approach here and includes a fixed protective cover with the monitor that can remain on the monitor and then be folded up. This is simple, quick and provides additional protection for the display side of the monitor.
However, if the cover is not needed, it can be removed from the monitor very easily.
Conclusion
Sure, the Viltrox monitor is in the middle price range with a price between 220-250,–, but its quality and the functions as well as the scope of delivery justify this price in my opinion. The Viltrox DC-X2 will therefore be my standard monitor from now on for both video and photo, e.g. in the macro area, because such a monitor simply allows for more precise focusing.
