This week it was about installing Da Vinci Resolve on Linux. After all, Black Magic is one of the few manufacturers that supports Linux, and it’s also about relying more and more on Windows with its CoPilot and Recal spy functions. The latter in particular is not exactly easy.

There are basically 2 methods of installing Da Vinci Resolve on Linux. Firstly, there is DaVinciBox, which creates a virtual machine that in turn contains the dependencies and libraries that Da Vinci needs. It’s quite easy to install and works very well. I tried it out with the free version of DaVinci Resolve and didn’t notice any limitations.

Last week reiview 45-2024The second tool is makeresolvedb by Daniel Tuffeson, which creates a Debian package that can be installed on both Debian and Linux Mint, for example. You download the Linux package from Blackmagic (regardless of whether it is Studio or the free version) and with a few additional tools you can create a deb package. I prefer this method now and recently updated to Da Vinci Resolve 19.03.

Last week reiview 45-2024Otherwise there is news from Pixelmator, a photo editing app for Mac devices. Like Affinity Photo, it is supposed to be a Photoshop alternative, but has now been taken over by Apple. This raises the question of whether this app will be retained or whether the functions will also be available in Apple Photos at some point. Or maybe just parts of it, and you can then upgrade for a fee.

And finally, DPReview has published a buylist of the best mirrorless cameras. Among them are brands such as Sony, but also Canon and Fuji. It’s a bit of a shame that Panasonic, the first company to introduce a mirrorless camera, isn’t there.

Finally, all the Black Friday offers are coming up, including at Skylum. Luminar NEO is available at a reduced price from now until December 1st. You can get a 12-month subscription for €49 or the license for €79. And if you use the code Tuxoche when ordering, you’ll get an extra 10% discount.

All in all, another very eventful week. I hope you like the articles and look forward to your questions and comments.

ciao tuxoche
