Last week review 02-2026
Weekly Review 02-2026 and we even got a little bit of snow here in my area 🙂

Last week I presented the 2025 year in review. Unlike others, I always wait until the year is truly over before posting this; perhaps I’m a little superstitious. The year 2026 had a lot to offer, both in a photographic sense and especially in the areas of servers/IT.
But the time between Christmas and New Year’s was also a little hectic this year, at least that’s how I perceived it. A few days before Christmas, Skylum came out with its final autumn update, an AI assistant for photo editing. That would have meant I would have had to edit a potential video over the Christmas holidays. That was a bit much for me. Therefore, that video will be released next week.

Then, on December 24th, OpenMediaVault 8, also known as Synchrony, was finally released. The most significant change is probably that OpenMediaVault is now based on Debian Trixie, whereas the previous version was based on Debian Bookworm. The upgrade went smoothly using the omv-release-upgrade script, even though I have a Proxmox kernel installed for the ZFS file system. Afterward, I was able to start OMV as usual. And the web GUI really doesn’t show any signs of a new major version.
Since the base system was now based on Debian Trixie, I naturally took the opportunity to update the Proxmox Backup Server to version 4. This also went smoothly after adjusting the corresponding source file for the packages.
And speaking of updates, on December 29, 2025, UGreen released a firmware update for its NAS systems, version 1.12.0.0095. The actual update on my DXP4800 Plus went smoothly, and after the usual restart, I was able to access the NAS as normal.
I only use the NAS as a NAS, and there is no internet access to the device. I consider this dangerous, as UGreen doesn’t deem it necessary to update the base to Debian Trixie or even install security patches for Debian Bookworm.
In this day and age, I find this irresponsible, especially since security patches are still being provided. So, the problem lies with UGreen.
That was the first weekly review for 2026, and as always, a very eventful week.
